5 Signs It’s Time for a Hair Reset This Fall

Summer can be a whole lot of fun — and a whole lot on your hair. Between the heat, humidity, and vacations, your hair may be ready for some extra attention this fall. A little hair reset gives you an opportunity to check in with the condition of your hair and scalp, address damage or dryness, and adjust your routine for the months ahead. Here are five signs your hair may be asking for a fresh start this fall.

1. You’re Noticing More Shedding or Breakage

Seeing hair in your comb or brush is completely normal. Hair naturally sheds as part of its growth cycle, but if you’re noticing significantly more hair than usual or lots of shorter, broken strands, it’s worth paying attention.

Breakage can happen when hair needs more protein, becomes dry, is manipulated too frequently, experiences excessive heat, or stays in a protective style too long. Tangling and rough detangling can also contribute to the problem.

The first step is figuring out what you’re actually seeing. Shed hairs typically come from the root, while breakage happens somewhere along the shaft. Either way, increased hair loss is a good reason to take a closer look at your current routine and give your hair some extra care.

2. Your Hair Feels Dry No Matter What You Do

You deep conditioned. You moisturized. You added your favorite leave-in. And somehow, your hair still feels dry.

Persistent dryness can be a sign that your hair needs more than another layer of product. Buildup, damaged ends, frequent heat exposure, environmental stress, or an imbalance in your routine can all affect how your hair looks and feels.

Sometimes, simplifying your routine can go a long way. Instead of piling on more products, a reset may mean thoroughly cleansing the hair and scalp, following with a conditioning treatment, and reevaluating which products your hair actually needs.

3. Your Ends Are Telling on You

Your ends are the oldest part of your hair and they've been through everything. If they look thin, feel rough, tangle easily, or have visible splits, it may be time for a trim.

If length is the goal, cutting your hair can feel counterproductive — but keeping damaged ends doesn't help you retain healthy length. Split ends can continue to weaken the strand, leading to additional breakage and making your hair more difficult to manage.

Fall is a great time to clean up those ends and head into a new season with a healthier foundation.

4. Your Scalp Is Itchy, Flaky, or Experiencing Buildup

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. During the summer, increased sweating combined with oils, gels, edge controls, leave-ins, and other styling products can create buildup on the scalp.

If you've also spent much of the season wearing braids or another protective style, your scalp may be ready for some extra attention. As mentioned, itching, excessive flaking, tenderness, or noticeable buildup shouldn't be covered with more product. A thorough cleansing can help remove sweat, oil, and product residue so you're starting the season with a clean foundation.

If scalp problems are severe, persistent, painful, or accompanied by sores or unusual hair loss, consider talking with a dermatologist.

5. Your Hair Just Isn't Acting Like Itself

Sometimes there isn't one obvious problem.

Your curls aren't curling the same. Your usual styles aren't lasting. Detangling takes forever. Your hair feels dull, limp, tangled, or harder to manage.

That's information, too.

Changes in how your hair behaves can signal that it's time to reassess your routine. You may need more moisture, less manipulation, a trim, a thorough cleanse, or a break from the styles you've been wearing. Rather than fighting your hair every morning, use the change of seasons as an opportunity to figure out what it needs now.

So, What Does a Fall Hair Reset Look Like?

There's no one-size-fits-all reset. Depending on the condition of your hair, yours might include:

It can also be as simple as creating a more consistent maintenance routine for fall. The goal isn't to do everything. It's to identify what your hair needs and give it the proper care.
